May 24th, 2008 Insane gas prices

High gas prices in the USAIn Japan we’ve been dealing with super high gas prices for years, while those of you in the States (dad, mom, Vi, DT, et al), have been living a life of comparative ease- until now! Check out this article in today’s NY Times. Wow! I was shocked when I saw that photo- up to $5.69 for a gallon of gas in the USA???!!! What is that??? This is way way higher than just last year, when I visited you all. I remember feeling shocked when I saw $2.70/gallon; now it’s averaging over $4???? How are you dealing with this?

Here in Japan, gas prices just shot up again. I figured it out, and we’re up to about $5.89/gallon ($1.55/liter). We’re dealing by driving a lot less. I’ve been riding my bike to work almost every day. Thankfully it hasn’t been raining much… But what about you guys? How do you manage with such insane prices? Let me know by leaving a comment below.

George Bush and his corporate oil coneys buddies… Luckily I work only a short drive from home… and I ride my fancy new bicycle as much as possible. That being said, Anne Marie and I just drove from NY to MA to NH to ME back down thru RI, CT, NJ, DE, MD, VA, WV and PA on a 2 day, 12 state mega-geocaching road trip! Gas prices be damned!!!!!

    Hey DT,

Thanks for the comment. Interesting… so you seem to be dealing with it much like we do here- cut down on a lot of day to day driving when possible, then not letting keep you from doing the things you really want to do.

Well, we don’t drive much anyway, and we cut down to one car which helps a lot. You’d think the SUV drivers would be embarrased these days to drive around with those hunkers, but they keep gas guzzling away…I heard there’s forecasts of the price going up to $8 or $10. Which when you look at the world market, it makes sense. It’s funny, we americans want the good life but we don’t want to pay for it…

Eight or ten dollars a gallon???!!! Wow, that’s unbelievable. I don’t think it will come to that. But if it does, I wonder if those gas guzzlers will change their habits or not. Right now, there’s a feeling of “it sucks, but I won’t let it get in the way of what I want to do.” I wonder at what point it will all get too much. I hope the bright side of this problem really pushes more “green” technologies.

Rob, you mentioned in another post that gas had reached $4.25 in Portland, OR. Well, I can top you! Here in some parts of the country, gas has reached ¥200 per litre, which comes out to $7.05/gallon!!!! Wooo hooo!!!

    :-(

Here in Toyama it has reached ¥175/litre ($6.17). Ouch!

I hope Obama picks Gore to be his running mate, wins the election, and then helps lead the charge to a greener future.

    Hi there,
had to check the news on the family in Asia and came across this article. Since you mentioned worldmarket… In Germany we have arrived at 9,54 $ per Gallon. No kidding. We pay 1,60 € per liter. And yes, we do drive two cars because of work. However we have been thinking about finding an alternative… So I guess it will end up by arriving 8-10 $ in the States as well.
    Take care
    Tanya

$9.54 a gallon????? Wow! That’s more than double what folks are paying in the States. People there should count their lucky stars that gas is so cheap! :-)

Here in Japan it just went up again the other day- in our town, it’s now up to ¥180 per liter ($6.46/gallon, 1.01 euro/liter). Crazy!
