First, very well done! I am jealous that you grew so many vegetables! We tried tomatoes and various herbs, but only harvested a handful of tomatoes (plum and beefsteak). Second, I am very impressed with your english skills. All I can say in Japanese is 'sushi' (and thank goodness for that, since I LOVE to eat it!!!!) Third - Max. Holy cow what a cutie pie. Fourth - My favorite line by Luke was '...harvest our crop' since 'crop' sounded a little like another word, which you would NOT want to harvest! that was fun, thanks for sharing!

@Rita: Thanks for your kind comment. Yes, that is one good thing about life here, but of course it varies from family to family. Shinobu and I are very united on giving a good life to our kids. We're looking forward to your visit!

@Dad: Yes, Shinobu and I are very passionate about sports, something we are keen to pass on. I had a lot of fun video taping all that... Of course we fell down a lot, and I'm thinking of doing a "wipe-out" video soon... we'll see!

We've been following the Olympics very closely! It's big news here, especially the events the Japanese athletes excel in. The snowboarding event was very exciting. We watched it live early in the morning... The Japanese snowboarder got a lot of attention here because of the sloppy way he wore the official uniform in the airport coming over... He almost got kicked out of the games for not tucking in his shirt!!! They are very strict about that here... And the figure skating is REALLY big. Wall to wall news reports and documentaries. Every single aspect is dissected. Thing is, unlike the States, this (and speed skating) is really the only thing going for Japan. So much attention is placed on a few top athletes. It's a lot of pressure! I hope Luke will be able to deal with it when he makes the Olympic team!!! :-)

Gerald,

I sometimes think that you enjoy the sports more than the kids.

Nice photography, you and Shinobu always do nice work.

How did the family enjoy the snowboarding in the Olympics. The Japanese man who took bronze in figure skating was very good.

Keep up the good work!

I always was higly impressed how Japenese people pay much attention to their children upbringing. Talandis family is not exception.
It is beautiful, it is healthy and young generation finds its place under the Sun.

Best wishes from Lithuania

Thanks for the comment, Andrea. Yes, things have changed a bit, but not a lot in other ways. But then again, things have gradually changed for me, so I've gotten used to everything. For you, not having seen the place for years, I can imagine that things look really different. Kind of like meeting a child when they're young and then again when they've grown...

Yes, Yatsuo was incorporated into Toyama City. The entire prefecture has been redrawn for the most part. The idea is for small towns to have better access to federal money.

Thanks again for visiting. Hope to see you back here!

Your neighborhood has changed so much!! I remember when your house was the only one....sort of out in the boonies! Looks really neat right now! Hey, I just read that Yatsuo was incorporated into Toyama City a few years back. What was behind that?

Love the website!

Thanks, Kika! I'm glad you could watch this clip. It introduces several things about our lives at once- My son, a bit of his school life, our neighborhood, and what it looks like in the summer here in Toyama.

@Rimgaudas: Aciu labai!

@Vi: He might be... he and Max are pretty tall for their age around here. No summer school- classes ended this past Friday and resume at the beginning of September (2nd term). They do pile the kids with tons of homework, however, and each neiborhood has a "morning exercise" routine that starts at 6:30am. I'll be helping Luke get through the former quickly and won't push him to do the latter. For me, a summer vacation is just that!

Yeah, it was a lot of fun. We'll probably go back to these parks more often this summer while I'm at home. You're right about Luke and Max- Luke was into it right from the start, but Max took a while to get warmed up to the idea. She ended up really having fun, too.

@Dad: Yeah, we try out best to do as much as possible. My new schedule is helping, believe it or not. Now that I'm not around as much, we're making much better use of the time we have. This will be the theme of my next video, in fact- it's been a really great thing.

@Vi: Interesting way to look at that comment. I never thought like that, but I suppose it fits.

Now that I’m not around as much, we’re making much better use of the time we have. This will be the theme of my next video, in fact- it’s been a really great thing.

Glad you liked it, Vi! I used the brand new version of iMovie- it's better than ever and can do a lot of cool things. Look for more editing fun in future clips.

About the 2/11 holiday- I have a terrible secret I have to tell you- I have NO IDEA what the holiday is myself!!! And I've only lived here 16+ years. Obviously it's not a major holiday- just an excuse for a day off. I know I can Google it and find out, but I'm hoping my loyal audience can help me.

Hey, nice comments so far! Thank you all for them. I was worried that this clip was too long and boring, but it seems you don't mind too much. I just wanted to show the journey of getting there, what it looks like around campus, and give you the story of how we decided on taking this job. I say "we" on purpose- it was not just my decision. This move effects everyone in our family, and it was taken very seriously. If it hadn't been for my wife's encouragement, none of this would have been possible. Same for my in-laws.

I'm in Tokyo now as I type this. I need to meet the Uni president tomorrow morning, as well as the program director. It's at the downtown Tokyo campus (the school has two campuses), so Shinobu and I are taking the subway tomorrow morning. In the afternoon we're visiting the real estate agent's office to sign a lease on an apartment (in the building you saw in the video).

Busy busy, exciting exciting.

Fantastic! I agree with the comment above. My kids are also young so I can understand your quandary. Sounds like a great move for the Talandis family. You'll make the most of your time together and catch up on your reading and DVD viewing - win/win situation.

Your demeanor and voice are extremely soothing. You seem so relaxed and positive and watching this video put me in that same frame of mind. Whatever you're on, I want some;-)

Nice touch at the end, including the collage of images from Omiya station. Reminds me of my time living in Japan (wife and I moved to the US in 1995). Sounds trivial, but the tasty and fashionable little shops are one of the main reasons I plan at some point to move back to Tokyo with my family.

All the best to you and your family, and good luck to you with the new position!
