Dear Jerry,

What a lovely video. So many precious moments with babies... they happen so quickly.

An important moment for me happened when my daughter, Ruby, turned 10 in early December. I spent time going back through photographs, remembering her growing up. The memories are so palpable that I can recall the weight of her in my arms when she was a baby and then a toddler. I remember the feel of her skin.

10 is so different. She's suddenly so much older. She now thinks critically about her environment rather than accepting whatever's there.

I look forward to watching your children grow by video. They're beautiful. You look so happy with them. I imagine you're a wonderful father.

What a joyful series of images! It is so good to see you and Shinobu and your smiling face and those of your beautiful children. They are growing up so full of energy and light. My only regret is that I can't giggle over their antics with you both while we enjoy a pot of tea! Happy New Year--may it be filled with health and love and light.

Hi Jerry (and family)! Thanks for sharing the video. It almost makes me want to have another baby as I watched Max learn to crawl and walk. That seems far away for me. Our two boys are now 4 (as of yesterday) and 5 (turning six in January). My wife and I are visiting her parents at their winter home north of Phoenix and are heading to Santa Fe to see my family tomorrow. Lots of flying. I was back in Tokyo this summer but only for a short visit. I'm hoping that one of these days I'll be able to find time to head over to the west coast to visit you. Take care and stay in touch.

Best,

Mason

Jerry,

lots of wonderful moments this year. From our cats liking each other to 5th wedding anniversary (which makes 10 years of being together) and still being in love with each other.

Jerry,

So many blessings this year, its hard to choose just one! If pressed, I'd have to say it is the deepening work of the path... so glad you are a part of it!

Okay, dad! You can download the entire article by clicking the link above (where it says, "just click here"). I will also email you the direct link.

Oh, some related news: I'll be giving a workshop on this topic at Toyama University on December 12th. They have a Mac computer lab there, so I will lead all the participants through a simple project.

Hey Dad,

No, we didn't borrow money from the broker- we got it from Shinobu's mom. I agree that diversifying is a good idea, and perhaps we'll grow into that. These days Shinobu is really into this stock market thing- it's like her new hobby! She's online every evening, and constantly checking her iPhone for the latest stock news. It's pretty cool to see. We are talking about a lot of ideas these days, so I'm sure we will expand our investment horizons someday.

No, no family video this time. I have a few in the can, however, and I'll be releasing them gradually.

Gerald and Shinobu,

Good luck with the investment. I hope you did not buy on margin (borrowing money from the broker). If you invest again, diversity. The sage advice is to spread your investment among 20 companies in five industries.

I have read the W. Buffet article some time ago. Good advice but easier said than done.

I don't see any video of your family.

Hey! Nice to see so many comments! I'll respond one by one:

@Kimo: Wow, it's so cool that you picked up on this video. Now I can see the value in adding tags to posts! I'll be happy to write up a report on the race for your site.

@Vi: Yeah, Luke like's that "Eye of the Tiger" song a lot, but I'll save that one for another video. And yes, all the kids that finished got medals, so it's not as if he was special. Still- he is special to us! :-) He was the youngest participant, and he did a great job in harsh conditions.

@DT: Hey DT! Stop feeling jealous and go run around your park TODAY! :-) You know where all the trails are, right? My race was 750m swim, 16km bike (with some killer hills), and a flat 5km run. So, it was easy-SUPER HARD-easy. Took me about 1:45, which is at the high end of what I can do. Luke's race: 100m swim, 2km bike, 1km run. This distance was just right for a 1st grader.

@Dad: You give out gold medals in your classes??? Wow, sign me up. :-)

wow. So cool. I am very proud (and jealous - I have not kept up my fitness in the last year) of both of you. I would LOVE someday to do a race all of us together...? Maybe someday. How far was each leg? For both of you, I'd like to know how far you had to go. Just curious. Thank you for sharing!

wow. So cool. I am very proud (and jealous - I have not kept up my fitness in the last year) of both of you. I would LOVE someday to do a race all of us together…? Maybe someday. How far was each leg? For both of you, I’d like to know how far you had to go. Just curious. Thank you for sharing!

Woo, I coud feel the heat from here! I was sure the "Rocky" theme would be in there, but I guess your musical genre has expanded!! Did Luke win gold or did every kid get one?

Congratulations on your race, especially in the heat. We know how much harder it can be to compete in the humidity. Also, we're trying to expand our triathlon calendar and would very much like a race report from a Japan triathlon. If you would like to participate please post your race report and we'll put it on the "Japan Triathlon" page for other triathletes to read. Thank you, Kimo and Kali. http://www.triathlon-calendar.com/triathlons.html

$9.54 a gallon????? Wow! That's more than double what folks are paying in the States. People there should count their lucky stars that gas is so cheap! :-)

Here in Japan it just went up again the other day- in our town, it's now up to ¥180 per liter ($6.46/gallon, 1.01 euro/liter). Crazy!

Tanya,

Great to hear from you!

Yes, that is the way they plant trees over here. That guys effort was "par for the course", as they say. Nobody would think his work was anything special- it's just the way things are done. This is what I love about this country- there is a very high degree of professionalism associated with work.
