A Typical New Years Day
Happy New Year, everyone. It’s a big deal here in Japan, as you may know, with a spiritual be-with-family vibe similar to Thanksgiving or Christmas in the States. This slideshow covers the highlights of our day:
(Click on it to view full-screen, navigate with arrow keys)
- Having osechi-ryori (traditional foods) at Shinobu’s parents’ house, along with Shinobu’s brother Takuya and his new wife.
- Luke and Max excitedly receiving their otoshidama (envelope with money).
- Papa drinking an omiki (1st sake of the year) with Ji-chan.
- Watching TV and hanging out at the kotatsu table.
- Driving out to the mountain village of Tateyama to visit the old and famous Oyama Jinja.
- Following the typical routine at the Jinja and enjoying the gorgeous winter atmosphere.
- Having a cup of coffee and a snack afterwards.
- Going shopping at the mall (big mistake! It was way too crowded).
- Finally relaxing at home and reading nengajyos (greeting cards).
This is basically what we do every year. It has become quite the comforting routine.
How did you spend your New Years holiday? Any resolutions for 2012?
