Favorite Family Photos: Luke in the Pool
Love this photo of Luke during swim practice one day in 2010. It captures his great smile and playful demeanor. During my break times from work, I’m often in the pool with Luke, suffering together through Coach Mama’s tough workouts. Through all the laps, we clown around a lot and have some fun.

If something bad happened and you could only save a handful of your photo collection, which ones would choose? That’s the question guiding this series of blog posts I’m dubbing “Favorite Family Photos”. It’s a chance to look back at the past 10 years and revisit special moments in our family’s history. These are our best and most precious memories.
Favorite Family Photos: Mizubei Plaza
This is a wonderful shot of Luke walking along a bike path above Mizubei Plaza, the park in front of our home. It was a late summer afternoon, and Luke was on his way home from drawing a picture by the riverside. This photo fills me with peace and a feeling of gratitude for being able to live in such a nice area. The Jinzu River is just to the right, and on a clear day you can see the mountains.

Favorite Family Photos: Our House in Summer
This is one of my favorite all-time shots of our home, definitely the best summer one. It was taken in late August of 2010. This one just came out super great. The grass was at its peak of green, and the late afternoon sunshine wrapped everything in a golden hue. Looking at this photo makes me feel a great deal of gratitude and humility for being able to live here: “Yeah, this is home.”

Favorite Family Photos: Luke Hikes in Hakuba
Here’s a collage of two really great shots taken during our memorable three-day trek in the mountains near Hakuba in Nagano Prefecture. Luke’s grandpa led the way, and we saw some amazing sights, as these photos relate. Luke was a real trouper on this trip and was rewarded with some great memories.

Favorite Family Photos: Climbing the Daisekkei
In late summer of 2010, Luke and I hiked for three days in Hakuba, in the mountains near where the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics were held. It was an amazing trip that yielded many awesome photos, but this one stands out: a shot of Luke climbing the Daisekkei, the largest field of year-round snow in Japan. It was like hiking up a ski slope, only in high heat and humidity. It was a slippery and sometimes scary experience, but Luke handled it very well. He wore crampons, which really helped.

Favorite Family Photos: In Luke’s Cool Shades
This is actually one of my favorite ever photos of me! As you can see, I’m reflected in Luke’s sunglasses. If I look very happy, it’s because I am! This is why I chose this photo of me for my Facebook avatar image.
Note: Color effects done with Colorsplash on my iPad.

Favorite Family Photos: A Smile Between the Wheels
Another shot from the 2010 Hikiyama festival. When Luke was taking a break from pulling the float, I got this shot of him smiling between the ornately decorated wheels. I love it because of the wonderful colors and Luke’s natural, un-posed smile. He is so beautiful…

Favorite Family Photos: Under the Hat
Luke pay Max a visit at the 2010 Hikiyama festival. Max was only three, so I was wheeling her about in a baby carriage. Luke came over during a break and put himself nose to nose with his sister. What a sweet moment between these two! I love this photo because it brings you right there under Max’s hat and enables you to share in their connection.

This shot of Luke was taken on May 2nd, 2010, at the annual Hikiyama festival in Yatsuo-machi, our home town in Toyama Prefecture. Luke participated with the Shitashin-machi neighborhood group. He took turns helping pull this huge ornate float and also riding in it. Of course it wasn’t hard to pull, so Luke was just joking around here. But I love this photo because it really captures Luke’s playful sense of humor. He’s always moving and joking around. Sometimes it’s too much, but mostly he’s just fun to be with.

Favorite Family Photos: Running Through a Field of Green
Taken from that same park outing in the fall of 2010, this shot features Max running across a deep green lawn. I just love green open spaces (they are relatively rare here in Japan), so this shot just sits very right with me in a minimalist way.
